Passive Income Shifts & What My Marketing DNA Test Results Revealed

Whew! Life took an unexpected turn in early March, and my focus shifted from being a full-time entrepreneur to a full-time caretaker. My dad, who had enjoyed near perfect health, suddenly fell ill, going from perfect health on March 2nd to being near death by March 6th due to a severe kidney infection. He initially thought he had the flu; unfortunately, it was much worse. The infection spread to his bloodstream, causing septic shock, and his organs began failing one after another. Before he knew of the infection, he experienced dizziness and fell in the bathroom, breaking both ankles. Yes, both! This left him unable to put any weight on either leg and dependent on a wheelchair. It’s been nearly two months since then, with delays in getting clearance for ankle surgery due to multiple doctor consultations. As you can imagine, this sudden change is challenging for someone so active; it drives him nuts being stuck in a chair all day. Fortunately, his health has improved, and he’s approved for surgery this Wednesday, with therapy expected to begin shortly after.
Thank Goodness For The Biz!
In the midst of these events, I feel incredibly fortunate to have my online business—especially during what could’ve been an extended period off. Most of March was a wash in terms of business activities. Despite everything, this year is shaping up to be one of my best yet. In February, I achieved:
- $10K revenue from Merch by Amazon
- Over $13K total print-on-demand revenue across various platforms (Amazon, Etsy, RedBubble, Spreadshirt, Zazzle, etc.)
This marked the first time my print-on-demand income surpassed my largest affiliate source (GoDaddy’s reseller program). While these numbers look impressive, keep in mind that Merch by Amazon is not a guaranteed income stream. I’ve invested tremendous time and effort over the last year, and income fluctuates wildly. Therefore, do not join Merch expecting consistent monthly growth. Mine has been up and down like a rollercoaster! Nevertheless, I’m obsessed with this opportunity.
I also had another record month with my PSP courses. As you may recall, my primary method for promoting courses is through podcasting. Affiliate income was once my main focus, but it’s taken a back seat to course sales—a long-standing business goal of mine. For years, I relied heavily on affiliate income, and I wanted to see a shift.
Just Launched a Course? The Work Isn’t Over!
A key lesson from my students with Passive Shirt Profits is that your work doesn’t end when you launch your courses. Many believe, "Once the course is launched, the hard part is over." Wrong! That’s actually when the real work begins. While creating course videos was easy for me, ensuring students can execute effectively is a continuous challenge. Every course is bound to have areas where some students struggle while others breeze through—assuming certain things are clearer than they truly are. Typically, your initial version will be subpar, but student feedback and questions should help you improve it significantly.
Staying Connected With Students
This year, I introduced a new strategy with my Merch Course that has benefited both me as an instructor and several students. I began sending weekly strategy tips to students, and it’s been fantastic!
